  2. Cool Weather = Hot Recipes!

If you are like most of us, somewhere in your kitchen (buried beneath the pots and pans) you have a lonely crockpot stashed away that is patiently WAITING for the weather to get cooler so that it can be used again! Crockpots and slow cookers have been around a long time, but often are forgotten about in our never ending quest to prepare a ‘quick’ dinner for the family. However, the time you will save using a crockpot to make a satisfying meal is well worth the advanced preparation.

So, dust off your crockpots and let the cooking commence! Your family will love the healthy, hearty and delicious recipes that you can conjure up in your crockpot! You will love the fact that you just need to mix a few ingredients, turn on the nob and let your slow cooker do ALL the work for you!

Now that the weather is cooling down, it is time to heat up the crockpot. From fish and barbeque to burritos and beans, your crock pot will quickly become your favorite cooking accessory! Here’s a great recipe for a delicious shrimp Creole recipe!

    • 1 1/2 c diced celery
    • 1 cup chopped onion
    • 3/4 cup chopped bell pepper
    • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
    • 1 large can (28 oz) whole tomatoes
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
    • 4 to 6 drops Tabasco sauce, or a dash or two of ground cayenne, to taste
    • 1 to 1 1/2 pounds medium shrimp, deveined and shelled

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker except shrimp. Cook 3 to 4 hours on high or 6 to 8 hours on low. Add shrimp last hour of cooking. Serve over hot boiled rice.

  3. Enjoying the autumn season

There is something about the fall season that brings out the kid in all of us! Who doesn’t have memories of jumping into a huge pile of leaves that your dad spent all afternoon raking? What about the wonderful aromas that would come from the kitchen while mom was baking a delicious pumpkin pie?

Fall is a beautiful season to celebrate. The weather is getting cooler, the holidays are right around the corner, and everyone seems to be a little happier! (It could also be the fact that the kids are back in school and football season has started up again.)

So, how do you plan to enjoy this magical fall season? Here are some of our favorite things to do during the autumn months.
    1. Go for a family bike ride. There is nothing better than getting a little exercise and breathing in the fresh fall air.
    2. Bake a homemade pumpkin pie with the kids.
    3. Visit a local farm or orchard and pick your own fruits and vegetables. There are plenty of places to do this activity. Your kids will have a new appreciation for the food they eat. http://www.pickyourown.org/FLwest.htm
    4. Attend a football game at your local high school and cheer your team on.
    5. Take a trip to your local farmer’s market. Then come home a break out your crock pot and make a hearty stew or soup for dinner.
    6. Plan a neighborhood block party – the weather is perfect for being outdoors.
    7. Have a picnic! Even if it is in your backyard, it is always fun to eat outside.
    8. Host a football ‘tailgate’ party! Make your own salsa using fresh tomatoes – yummy!
    9. Bake a batch of cookies or brownies and deliver it to your local fire station. Our fire fighters love homemade goodies
    10. Volunteer to walk the dogs at your local humane society. The dogs LOVE playing in the cooler weather
The opportunities for fall-fun are endless!

  5. Color Your World – A Hues Flash

Want to give your home a brand new look and NOT spend a lot of money doing so? Instead of going out and purchasing new furniture and furnishings, you may want to consider adding a splash of color to your rooms to create a dramatic flare.

Paint is one of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to redecorate your home. And, the wonderful thing about painting is that you can change it up as often as you like.

Before you make that trip to the paint store, here are a few tips to get you started:
    1. Think about how you use a room and what mood you want to create. Lively colors, like reds, oranges and yellows, turn up the volume, providing a friendly backdrop for a family space, kid’s room or dining area.
    2. Want a tranquil spot for reading and relaxing? Cool off with blues, greens or purples.
    3. Neutrals- grays, whites and browns- complement most rooms and size up your space.
    4. Pale shades work best in sun-filled rooms; white deep tones thrive in poor light
    5. To cozy up in a cavernous place, go dark.
    6. Feeling cramped? Light hues lend a sense of airiness and expansiveness.
    7. A rich color can make a tiny room look like a jewel box.

Remember, rules are meant to be broken. Always go for a color that YOU truly like. After all, you will be the one spending time in the room.
